One dead after taxi knocks down two children

An eight-year old school girl was tragically killed and an eight-year old boy sustained serious injuries after they both were knocked down by a taxi on Monday morning along Steadville’s Madiba Drive.

It is alleged that the children ran across the road and were struck by the mini bus. Sharaj Rescue was called to the scene and had found that the little girl died due to the impact of the taxi.
RTI and Public Safety had been on the scene first and placed the taxi driver in one of the officials vehicles after members of the community had become hostile and voilent towards officers and driver. One of the members of the community literally leap into the car and fisted the driver in the face.
“He must die, that man that you are hiding in your car must die,” shouted community members after the accident. “Let him go so that he we can placed him next to her body,” shouted other members of the community.
The SAPS Ladysmith Collision Respond had their hands full as they had tried to calm down the mob and gather evidence.
SGT Sunil Somaru appealed to the residents to allow police to handle the matter. “Please let us do our work, so that the justice can be done, killing the man will only make matters worse,” he said to angry mod.
The mob eventually calmed down and police and Public Safety proceeded with the investigation. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the Ladysmith police. The deceased has not yet been identified.
