Chats hospice to acknowledge generous donors

Chatsworth Regional Hospice plans to acknowledge its donors and sponsors who have supported the hospice since 1991.

After celebrating its momentous 21st anniversary last year, the Chatsworth Hospice has decided to embark on an interesting proposal to honour its donors and sponsors who have contributed handsomely to the reputable establishment since its formation.
The group was first formed in the temporary premises generously provided by the RK Khan Hospital. Since then, the hospice has grown from strength to strength and has even expanded its operations within the greater Chatsworth and southern Durban regions. As residents are aware, the Chatsworth Hospice is now situated in Silverglen, Chatsworth and to this date, still provides exceptional services to the community and its people.
Proud president of the hospice, Dr Pramda Ramasar said, “The hospice would never have been able to sustain its services to its patients and their families if it were not for the support and assistance received from not just the community, but also the business sector and members of the medical and allied professions. Due to the fact that the institution does not receive any state funding, we are dependent on fund-raising ventures that are conducted throughout the year and we also receive donations in cash and kind from the public. We remain fully committed to the mandate given to us by the Chatsworth community in 1991. Through this, we are able to provide a service that is free of cost to patients and their families. Our services range from inpatient care in the wards to home-based care and a day care clinic.” Some of the programmes which they embarked on includes the care project held in 2006 at an informal settlement for people suffering with life-threatening illnesses. This was followed by a worthy nutrition support programme in 2007 which targeted indigent patients and their families as well.
“Often, we reach the point of despair however, with a higher power guiding us, kind donors and sponsors also come forward to assist us and help take the burden off our shoulders. We are truly thankful for this. We honour them for caring. All we can do in return is provide a service of the highest quality,” added Dr Ramasar. To add to the hospice’s achievements, the organisation was provided with a four-star rating by the Hospice Palliative Care Association, a national body to which it is affiliated in 2012. “We must be doing something right. And we will soon work towards a five-star rating, not for the status achieved, but for the certainty that we are justifying the support given to us,” she said.
The programme to honour the respective donors and sponsors will begin on Saturday, May 18, 2013 with a beautiful donor appreciation tea for everyone who contributed in cash and kind last year.
The hospice thereafter intends to then go back in time, to honour all previous donors and sponsors.
